Literacy
I bought my tickets three weeks in advance, so they only cost $107 apiece, more than half the price of flying. I’d tell people that I’m excited to take the bus, that my only goal for the summer was to read as much as I can, that I haven’t read anything and summer is nearly over, that six days on a bus would give me the chance. Beyond everything else, the purpose of the trip was to read, I said. I was proud, maybe. The week prior, at the memorial service for one of my high school teachers, I told Steve (who I hadn’t seen since high school, who will not show up again) that I was excited, so excited. This seems a bit silly in retrospect. I’ve always wanted to simply be able to stop time and read every book there is.
